Short Meadow

In mild climates, sow seed during cooler months, generally October through March. This mix of twenty-two annuals and perennials, none more than 24 inches tall, is ideal for naturalizing sunny open areas, slopes, long borders, parking strips and cottage style gardens. In cool climates plant in the spring, 1 to 2 weeks before the last average frost date. Be sure to keep the weeds pulled so they do not compete with the flowers for water and sun. Soil must be kept moist while the seeds are germinating and beginning to grow. Some of the varieties included are, Baby Blue Eyes, Blue Pimpernel, California Blue Bell, California Poppy, Daisy African, Poppy Iceland, Verbena Moss, and Wallflower Siberian. Corn - Country Gentleman In the deep south, this can be as early as February. It is very tasty to eat fresh and it is used for creamed corn. Harvest the ears when the husks are dark green and the silks are brown but not brittle. The Corn Sweet Country Gentleman, 'Zea mays', was introduced in 1891. Named for a famous 19th century American agricultural magazine, Country Gentleman is an excellent old variety of corn for the home gardener, Plants are 6 to 7 feet tall and the ears are 8 inches long. Corn prefers a deep, rich well drained soil.
