Its waxy, bell-shaped, white flowers appear in May, which makes it an early season variety. Its cold hardiness and consistent crops of giant (quarter-sized) fruit make it a popular selection. Although blueberries are self-fertile, cross-pollination produces the best fruit crop. It is low growing and spreading with arcing branches. Birds love blueberries so be sure to plant enough to share!. Plants appreciate a good organic mulch. Blueberries are delicious, exceptionally nutritious, high in bioflavanoids. Patriot is a highbush blueberry cultivar which typically grows 4-6’ tall. Prune early before spring growth. This vigorous, upright and open shrub is an excellent landscape plant with its spring flowers and orange fall color. Blueberries are a delicious gourmet treat that may be eaten fresh or used in cobbler, cake, sauce, jam, jelly or syrup. You may get 10-20 pounds of dark blue, highly flavored fruit from a single bush. It is self-pollinating. The Patriot Blueberry, Vaccinium 'Patriot', has large blue fruit with excellent blueberry flavor, borne in tight clusters, and ripening in late July.
